Disease can occur and cause damage at any time of the year and will increase or decrease based on weather conditions. The best defense to help prevent lawn disease is to maintain a strong, healthy lawn with an annual lawn program.

- Aeration:
- Lawns should be aerated annually, usually in the fall.
- De-thatch:
- De-thatch your lawn every year, or as needed.
Thatch is a layer of partially decomposed grass blades, stems and roots. It occurs naturally but increases rapidly when using low quality fertilizer products. A small amount of thatch is beneficial, however, when the thatch layer exceeds ½” it can cause lots of problems. The thatch barrier will prevent water, air and fertilizer from reaching the roots properly. Insects and disease will make home in the thatch, and then cause damage and will be difficult to control.
De-thatching/power raking or core aeration should be to combat this problem and leave you with a healthier lawn. Your lawn will then require less water and have fewer problems with insects and disease. Early spring is the best time for de-thatching and it is often combined with over seeding.
